The Holy Spirit is many things to the Christian. It is what fills up the creation and is the bond between us and the Divine. It is God's power as it works in our life. Jesus is conceived by an act of the Holy Spirit. At important times in His life, such as at His baptism and by His death, the Holy Spirit appears.
There are many references in the scriptures to the Holy Spirit. A number of these refer to God "pouring his spirit on us". Two examples are:
Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring.
Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon
all flesh.
The "pouring out" of The Holy Spirit is an interesting word picture. If you were to put some small containers into a large container and then pour water into the large container, the water would fill all the spaces in the large container that would allow it to enter. Each small container that allowed the water in would be surrounded inside and out by the water. Some containers might keep water from coming inside - these would remain empty inside - but cannot keep the water around them from acting within the large container.
God pours out His Spirit on all of us, filling all of creation. Some of us are open to God and become filled with the Holy Spirit. Some of us resist and remain empty inside.
God didn't just pour out His Spirit one time and then sit back and watch. The Scriptures indicate that God does this over and over. He continues to pour out His Spirit on us - and will continue to do so through the end of days.
As Jesus was raised by the Holy Spirit, so will those who follow him be raised. The Father gave us life, the Son gave us eternity, and the Holy Spirit gives us power.
The Father is Creator and judge, the Son is Savior and brother, and the Holy Spirit is the power that connects us all together - the Divine to mankind, from God Himself to the least of his creation.
The Father, The
Son, and The Holy Spirit.
