Why is there such strong pushback on climate change at the same time as we are seeing overwhelming proof of weather extremes in the USA?
|
A |
We aren't "seeing" overwhelming proof of weather extremes, and that is precisely why there is strong pushback on the sky-is-falling extremism that climate hand-wringers are trying to push. There is a lot of rhetoric and hand-wringing and doom-saying and disaster predicting, but nothing that has so far been predicted in the past 50 years has actually occurred.
Want some 'seeing'? I live in Minnesota. It has been so cold this spring that when my wife and I go to the lake we still need to bring sweatshirts along and my wife brings a knit hat. There have been exactly 2 times all spring when I've actually been comfortable in shorts. The rest of the time it's still denim jeans. And we are only a few days from June.
The springs have been trending colder up here for a few years now. The thing is that climate cycles follow the sun’s phases and always have. Nobody denies that the climate changes, but most folks understand that this is normal and that we humans have little or no control over these cycles.

Then consider these items:
In 2013, an Antarctic research vessel named Akademik Shokalskiy became trapped in the ice. The problem was so severe that they actually had to rescue the 52 crew members.
In 2015 a Canadian ice breaking ship, the CCGS Amundsen, was forced to reroute and help a number of supply ships that had become trapped by ice.
In the summer of 2016 a group of adventurers, sailors, pilots and climate scientists started a journey around the North Pole (from Bristol, Alaska, to Norway, then to Russia through the North East passage, back to Alaska through the North West passage, to Greenland and then ultimately back to Bristol) with the goal of showing the lack of ice there. They became stuck in Murmansk, Russia, because there is too much ice blocking the North East passage - ice the team said didn’t exist during summer months. The icy blockade came just over a month after an Oxford climate scientist, Peter Wadhams, said the Arctic would be 'completely ice-free' by September of that year.
During the winter of 2019-2020, there were a number of reports that Arctic sea ice had unexpectedly reached normal levels this winter. This is a bit of good news for most of us, but hardly good news for global warming alarmists - and the media have avoided even mentioning it.
German high-tech research vessel 'Polarstern', of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), with 300 crew members, began an expedition into the mid-Arctic in September of 2019. On Feb 26 of 2020 NDR German public broadcasting reported that it appears the Polarstern’s crew will have to sit tight for a while longer. Russian supply ice breaker 'Captain Dranitsyn' was headed over to carry out a scheduled crew exchange but ended up consuming too much fuel trying to break through the sea ice - now the supply icebreaker no longer has enough fuel for the return trip because the ice is so thick that more fuel was burned than expected trying to break through it.
Also, have you seen this report?
"The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulate at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable."
When was this reported? It was reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post…are you ready for this?… on November 2, 1922 - nearly 100 years ago.
Then in the 1970s scientists and others were claiming a coming global cooling, which not so much later changed to global warming. The problem is that not even the so-called experts can make up their minds, and most folks are getting really tired of the constant doomsday climate extremism.

Q |
When you try to understand the physics it is rather clear that increasing CO2 level will result in warming.
|
A |
Consider these facts:
-
Temperature affects CO2 levels, not the other way around. So, for example, a rise or fall in temperature will be followed by a related increase or decrease in CO2 levels. In other words, the CO2 levels DO NOT affect the temperature.
-
Temperature data of past glaciations from NOAA indicate that temperature trends reversed direction regardless of CO2 level, proving that added atmospheric CO2 has no significant influence on average global temperature.
-
The earth warms up when the solar output rises, and cools when the solar output drops. There have been climate shifts throughout all of history, up and down.
-
The slightest warming of the oceans causes a huge release of dissolved CO2 (ocean CO2 is one of the elemental gases produced by Earth’s internal fission decay), just like warming a soft drink. This released CO2 dwarfs our human contributions. Recorded data actually match the solar output cycles.
-
Here are the sources of CO2 on Earth:
Oceans - 37,500 billion tons
Land biomass - 2000-3000 billion tons
The atmosphere - 720 billion tons
Humans - 6 billion tons
If we use the median value for land biomass, the total for all but human contributions is 40,720 billion tons. This means that man contributes a bit less than .00015% of the CO2 on Earth, the rest being produced in nature.
Consider also that raised CO2 causes an increase in vegetation growth because plants thrive on CO2 and release oxygen. Want to end starvation? Raise the CO2 levels a bit.
Bottom line is that elevated CO2 levels DO NOT cause temperatures to rise, and the CO2 levels that have so far been actually observed ARE NOT deadly.

Q |
Response to a global warming proponent claiming that there have never been climate scares.
|
A |
Not true. There have been climate scares for some time.
Start with this, for example. I have posted this before, but it is appropriate here so I'll include it. Consider this newspaper article:
"The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulate at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. When was this reported? It was reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post…are you ready for this?… on November 2, 1922 - more than 100 years ago.
Beginning around 1970 it was an 'impending ice age'. Then it was changed to global warming. Soon it will be an impending ice age again I suspect. For example:
In 1970 the Boston Globe reported "Scientist predicts a new ice age by 21st century".
In 1971 the Washington Post published a Columbia University scientist’s theory that the world was "as little as 50 or 60 years away from a disastrous new ice age."
Time magazine warned its readers in 1974 that an ice age was headed our way.
"Telltale signs are everywhere — from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest", the magazine reported.
The Guardian warned in 1974 that "space satellites show new Ice Age coming fast."
A 1989 Associated Press headline screamed: "Rising seas could obliterate nations: U.N. officials." The article went into a U.N. environmental official's theory that the United States would disappear by the year 2000 if global warming was not reversed.
Fast forward 15 years or so and Al Gore then brought global warming doomsday scenarios to the mainstream with his 2006 hit "documentary" called "An Inconvenient Truth". Gore predicted that Arctic ice would completely melt in seven years. This would mean that this should have occurred by 2013. Following his prediction, Arctic ice actually expanded. It is now melting at a quicker rate, but the expansion and then melting seems to support theories that alternate warming and cooling is part of a cycle that is not nearly as threatening to human life as leftists would have us believe.

Wrong Again: 50 Years of Failed Eco-pocalyptic Predictions
The following items don't rely on charts or graphs or predictions based on models. They are real observations by real people, which in my mind are a better barometer of what is actually happening.
In 2013, an Antarctic research vessel named Akademik Shokalskiy became trapped in the ice. The problem was so severe that they actually had to rescue the 52 crew members.

People can say there is less ice all they want, but these real scenarios, that we can actually SEE, would dispute that.

Q |
Response to someone claiming that 'Greenhouse gases' are causing warming.
|
A |
Claiming greenhouse gases as a problem requires proof that we are experiencing the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect means warming everywhere - meaning globally. Global warming hand-wringers changed their claim to 'climate change' when they realized that global warming was no longer a supportable thesis.
I guarantee you, we are not on a path to a global warming apocalypse. The climate is doing what it always does and will continue to do, and mankind's contribution to the climate is miniscule compared to what happens in nature well beyond our ability to alter. We have about as much chance of fundamentally changing the climate as we do of preventing the sun from rising tomorrow.
